The Spring Garden

I really do love spring. Even here in the South, everything gets brown and quite gloomy looking during the "winter". We've been spending a lot of time working in the yard, cleaning up all the old brown dead stuff and waiting with bated breath for the new lovely tender green babies to show their heads.
Some beautiful irises:

Soft lambs' ears:

And the spirea, which hardly even noticed the severe pruning it received last week:

The vegetable garden is all ready producing lettuces:

And with the extra square footage the husband added, we should have enough veggies for ourselves and sharing this year. I am really looking forward to spinach and peas, but tomatoes are not far behind.
Last week at one of the wonderful nurseries we frequent, Calloway's, we happened upon this oddity--a pitcher plant! It is a carnivorous plant. Is that not the craziest thing you've ever seen? The pitchers are HUGE--seven to nine inches long! WE haven't seen any bugs crawl in the pitchers yet, but hopefully it will keep the flies and mosquitoes under control. The only bad thing about it is that it smells kinda strong; the syrup in the pitchers smells rotten, which is how it attracts the bugs.

The amaryllis accidentally appeared outside, and within ten days has sprung up taller than a foot--man, do they grow fast! I'm tickled pink to see it has two plants as this plant was harvested from my parents' stash last year. Maybe by the time I'm in my eighties "I" will have a couple dozen plants as they do.

And what does George think about all this?

Lily's lov-e-lies

I couldn't resist posting the pics of Lily's booties:

and hat:

The booties need a ribbon for tying them on, the hat needs a single crochet edging, blocking, and ribbons.
I'm also knitting a sweater and I'm using "Tigger" from knitty as a jump-off point, making it my own for a newborn size.

I had the body practically finished last night, and realized when I split for the armholes, that I miscounted the stitches, so had to rip out and recount. Ugh.
Oooh, and I knit a blanket, will take a pic later and post. But now I need to run and get my hair done.
